I just don't get it...

I bought a set of patterns a week or so ago and I really like the cowl I made from it. I would love to put the item up on my etsy store, but the designer has a note at the bottom of the pattern stating that nothing made from this pattern could be produced for sale. Why? I feel that since I purchased the pattern I should be able to sell what I make from it. Nowhere in the description did it say this until the pattern was already purchased. I may be way off in thinking this, but it kinda bugs me! What are your thoughts on this? Is this legit or am I off my rocker? =-P

  1. I know what you mean. I've been carefully separating my "free" patterns in categories: "free" patterns that can be used only for charity, "free" patterns that can only be used for personal use, "free" patterns that can be used for whatever use as long as the designer gets credit, and the truly "free" patterns! lol Actually, before I download any pattern, I search dearly for the fine print.

There's some commentary on this on Ravelry if you want to read more: http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/crochet-on-ravelry/206249/1-25#17

  2. The problem is when, as Ashley did, you buy that pattern -not just download a free one- and spend your money on a project without knowing you're not allowed to sell the items later. I think the designer must tell that in advance.

  3. I agree with you, I think once you purchased the pattern you should be able to do whatever you want with the things you make from it.

  4. I agree too. I think that once you purchase it, it should be yours to do how you please. One commenter mentioned something about sewing patterns. I hardly think anyone takes note of seamstresses who sell wedding and bridesmaid dresses made from Vogue patterns. lol I don't see why crochet patterns are different. Oh well, c'est la vie, so goes life.
